I have cleared out my LJ again and am making a decision to start posting again. Grad school ate my life for two years but in my third and busiest year I am adamant to reconnect to human beings again. I also would like more writing practice. Facebook, while excellent for arranging weekend plans is dismally low on content so I think LJ still will have a niche for me.

I am also changing the focus of my LJ account. In a secondary effort to refocus my life, or rather to strengthen trends that have been flowing through my days for some time, I will be mostly posting about lifestyle topics namely that of Voluntary Simplicity.

Voluntary Simplicity is a term for something that I've been doing for some time. In short it's a decision to live smaller ecologically and psychologically. I've always been what I call an "anti-packrat". I don't like owning a lot of "stuff", and I find that the less I have physically, the less I have to worry about mentally. There's less to clean, less to insure, less to have anxiety about. Items deemed below a certain utility value get dropped from my life. Some of you will remember the media-mail purges where I threw entire series' of books at friends. In an evaluation of my lifestyle choices and sustainability I have also decided that I am going to live urban and carless for as long as I can. There are a large number of other activities which I am doing or are interested in but I'll skip the details for later posts.

I believe in this lifestyle deeply and I want to be better at it than I currently am. I've explained some of the principles to friends and I find few who disagree or contend with them. I think a lot of other people are interested as well. So I hope that by sharing this, I can inspire or empower others to do the same. Expect some ethical discussions and research, but also expect recipes, crafting projects and other fun things. If life's not fun, you're doing it wrong.

I'll post again soon.
